Progress. Oh wait…

So the report on executions and death sentences around the world from Amnesty International came out a couple of weeks back and guess what? We have continued the trend where we kill more people each year for committing crimes, instead of rehabilitating them. Splendid! This year four more countries also rebooted their judicial executions programmes so we now have even more actors carrying out these executions.

For a more detailed report see Amnesty Internationals webpages.

What is this world cumming to?

Or rather what isn’t the world cumming to? But seriously, there is a new reality show coming out soon, which is basically X-Factor for people who want to become porn stars, hosted by the newly famous Duke porn star Belle Knox. I’m not even going to comment on this, just putting this out there.

Data Retention Directive invalidated

The Data Retention Directive, more formally “Directive 2006/24/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 March 2006 on the retention of data generated or processed in connection with the provision of publicly available electronic communications services or of public communications networks and amending Directive 2002/58/EC”, was declared invalid by the European Court of Justice today.

It entails a wide-ranging and particularly serious interference with the fundamental rights to respect for private life and to the protection of personal data, without that interference being limited to what is strictly necessary.

If this means we will finally can undo the violation of our rights, I’m all for it, but we still got to deal with the NSA shit overseas, which in my opinion is way worse.

New Spotify interface: Somebody did not think this through

So Spotify launched their new fancy black interface the other day, and while I’m totally into a new look and all and the new interface looks awesome, it is kind of a pain in the ass when it crashes all the time. This is not an isolated problem either. Both my iPhone and my PC have had similar crash problems since the update. In addition the iPhone version seem to freeze up every time I press next or previous to browse the current playlist.

To me it seems like someone dropped the ball here and was way to focused on getting this out as quick as possible. Maybe testing this before such a major release would be an idea? No?

Anyway: I guess our friends over in Sweden will sort this out in a timely manner.

Alternate HIMYM ending in the works

For those who did not like the ending to CBS’ awesome show How I Met Your Mother the director have officially said that there will be another ending coming out. The catch? You will have to wait until the DVD box set is released.

First of all I want to say thank you for the lovely messages from everybody who loved the [HIMYM finale]. If you didn’tlike the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends.

So anyway, here’s a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.

Personally i liked the canonical ending really well, even though it felt a bit rushed. I wanted more depth to the story at the end there. I’m hoping this non-canonical ending will be even better!

Game Changer: eSports recognised at university

According to Gizmodo a Korean university now accepts gamers as student athletes. This comes after the US immigration officials started issuing visas for League of Legends players. Considering other non traditional sports like chess already is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as sports (although not practiced in The Olympic Games), it makes sense to threat eSports as a sport.

My two cents is that in the long run gaming will be equal to traditional sports like football and baseball.
